You've scheduled a professional painting crew, chosen your colors, and confirmed the date. Now comes the part that homeowners often underestimate: getting your home ready. A little preparation on your end goes a long way toward a smoother job, a better result, and a faster turnaround. Here's what the team at Paint Craft of Brevard recommends for both interior and exterior painting projects across Brevard County.
Preparing for Interior Painting
Interior prep doesn't need to be exhausting, but a few key steps will make a meaningful difference in how efficiently your painters can work — and how clean the final product looks.
Clear the Room as Much as Possible
The less that's in the room, the faster the job goes. Professional painters will move and protect furniture with drop cloths, but small items, decorations, electronics, and anything fragile should be removed entirely. Pull picture frames, mirrors, and wall art. Remove outlet covers and switch plates if you're comfortable doing so — we'll handle it if not, but it saves time.
Communicate Wall Repairs in Advance
If you know about holes, cracks, or water stains on your walls, mention them when you book the estimate. Good contractors will address minor repairs as part of the prep process, but larger issues — like a wall with significant mold behind it, or a water stain caused by an active roof leak — need to be resolved before painting. Painting over an active moisture issue is a waste of money and will fail quickly.
Consider Your Pets
This one often gets forgotten until day-of. Paint fumes can be irritating for dogs and cats, and an open door during a Florida summer means mosquitoes and heat flooding the work area. Arrange for pets to stay elsewhere for the day if possible. At minimum, keep them in a room that's not being painted with windows closed.
Make Access Easy
Clear pathways through your home so painters can move ladders, equipment, and material without navigating around obstacles. If you're in a gated community like Bayside Lakes or a Viera subdivision, make sure we have the gate code or entry access for the day of the job.

Exterior prep in Brevard County has a few unique considerations thanks to our climate — particularly humidity, mildew, and landscaping.
Trim Back Plants and Landscaping
Shrubs, vines, and trees growing close to the home's exterior make it difficult to properly prep and paint the surface underneath. Trim back any vegetation that's within 18 inches of the walls, soffits, or fascia. This also improves airflow and helps prevent mildew from returning quickly after the paint job is complete — a real concern in Central Florida's humid summers.
Move Outdoor Furniture and Decorations
Patio furniture, planters, garden hoses, and outdoor lighting fixtures should be moved away from the home or covered. Pressure washing is typically part of our exterior prep process, and you don't want a jet of water blasting your cushions or glass lanterns.
Disconnect Hoses and Flag Irrigation Heads
Let us know if you have low-profile irrigation heads near the foundation so we don't step on or cover them. Disconnect garden hoses from exterior spigots — we'll need those spigots accessible for our equipment.
Plan for Noise and Access
Exterior painting means painters will be working around the outside perimeter of your home, including near windows and entry doors. If you work from home, expect some noise from pressure washing and scaffolding. Our crews are professional and courteous, but it helps to plan your most focus-intensive work for a different day.
What Your Painter Handles (So You Don't Have To)
A good professional painting crew takes care of the technical prep that most homeowners shouldn't attempt themselves: surface sanding, spot priming, masking windows and trim, applying mildewcide wash to exterior surfaces, caulking gaps and seams, and protecting driveways and landscaping with drop cloths. All of these are standard parts of a quality Paint Craft of Brevard job.
